EXCLUSIVE: The star reveals what he really thinks about ex-cast members quitting the soap.
Popular actors Sophie Dillman (Ziggy Astoni), Patrick O’Connor (Dean Thompson), Kawakawa Fox-Reo (Nikau Parata), and Courtney Miller (Bella Nixon) also bid farewell this year, causing Home and Away to experience a wave of departures. The younger actors frequently come and go somewhat fast, although long-standing cast members Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart), Lynne McGranger (Irene Roberts), Ada Nicodemou (Leah Patterson), Emily Symons (Marilyn Chambers), and Georgie Parker (Roo Stewart) are unlikely to depart anytime soon.
The actors and writers decide how long to extend a new character’s stay in Summer Bay after the soap opera typically contracts them for three years. As seen by the departures of Sam Frost (Jasmine Delaney), Lukas Radovich (Ryder Jackson), Rob Kipa-Williams (Ari Parata), and Harley Bonner (Logan Bennett) last year, it does appear that the show has suffered some high-profile casualties over the past two years.
Theo Poulos in the soap, played by Logie-nominee Matt Evans, says to Yahoo Lifestyle that it is emotional when a cast member leaves and compares the feeling to “high school.”
It’s similar to high school because so many individuals would come and go from the event, he says. If I were to leave the show, it would be similar to graduating from high school and having to say goodbye to everyone.
He reveals that the cast and crew get together for a brief farewell to any members who are leaving and allow them to make a little speech to honor their time on the show.
“That part is really sad, but it’s also really exciting when someone new comes,” he acknowledges. “With people coming and going, it’s an emotional rollercoaster, and you just have to keep navigating your relationships around that.”
The actor is tight-lipped about how long Matt intends to stay in Summer Bay. In September 2021, he made his debut, and since then, he has assimilated himself into several of the show’s most important plotlines.
“Tough inquiry. I still have time left [on the show]. I’m sure I still have time. As long as…In reference to his independent music career, he says, “If I can manage this event and release songs, then I’m satisfied.
So, there isn’t a firm, conclusive response to it. I’m just sort of winging it at the moment.I like it,” he continues.
