The fan favourite has given a candid interview after a ‘surreal’ experience.
Lynne McGranger, a beloved Home and Away cast member, is celebrating the “surreal” occasion of receiving her first Logie nomination.
The actress has received her first nomination for her role as Irene on the popular Channel 7 drama, which she has played for 30 years. She says it “feels like it is not real” to receive the nomination.
The winner of the TV WEEK Silver Logie award for Most Popular Actress, which McGranger is up for, will be revealed on July 30 at The Star Sydney.
After learning of her nomination, she tells 7Life, “I still feel like it’s not real.
It’s quite bizarre; I’m at a loss for words.
“It’s just like why after 31 years I’m suddenly nominated?”
The actress says she is “not complaining” but found humour in the nomination after so long on screen.
“It’s like they’ve gone, ‘Let’s nominate all the old people on the show this year… What a good idea.
“Let’s not give it to anyone under the age of 45,’ which is kind of good.
“It’s sort of like old power and it is very exciting.”
According to McGranger, it is “fun” to be nominated among some of her closest friends and family members from the series.
James Stewart and Ray Meagher, co-stars of Home and Away, are up for a Silver Logie in the category of most popular actor, while Ada Nicodemou and Emily Symons are up for nominations in the actress category alongside McGranger.
She says, “I wish all the nominees the best of luck; it’s just a lovely thing to be a part of.”
The actress is unable to single out a particular narrative that she feels contributed to her nomination after reviewing the development of her characters over the course of the past year.
“We’ve done some great storylines,” says McGranger.
“We had the ones where Emily’s character, Marilyn, her evil daughter came to town and lured us all away and we all ended up getting drugged and tied up, just like it was a normal Saturday night, you know,” she quips of the dramatic plot.
“It had a beautiful plot, and it was wonderful for the elder people to work together.
“And the story about the big explosion at Stunning Organics that is currently airing,” she said.
Despite not having a direct role in that plot, Irene, according to McGranger, had “a lot to do with John Palmer, played by Shane Withington, who almost dies, and Roo, played by Georgie Parker, who is in all sorts.”
“So I think my current storylines have not got anything to do with the nominations, I just think that whoever chooses you just must have gone, ‘Oh, hang on a minute, you know, let’s give them a go.’
“I’m not complaining it’s lovely.”
While there is much to celebrate for Home and Away, festivities will take place on set, with the star explaining that following the announcement she is returning to work to continue filming.
“I’m there until seven o’clock tonight – if I’m still awake because I was up at half past three this morning because I had to be in makeup at five,” she says.
