Actress Juliet Godwin, who was born in Zimbabwe, has encountered more drama in her year in Summer Bay than most people have in a lifetime, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Godwin made her acting debut as Bree Cameron, the new emergency room physician at Northern Districts Hospital, in a dramatic moment where she had to save the life of a wounded local police officer, Cash (Nicholas Cartwright).

The 29-year-old performer, however, found herself at the center of a domestic violence scenario that unfolded over several months shortly after joining Home And Away, in which she was playing the lead part in her first significant prime-time role.

In the end, Bree killed her violent husband Jacob (Alex Williams) out of necessity. Bree later discovered she was pregnant and underwent a terrible abortion since she didn’t know if the baby’s father was her late husband or her new lover, Lyrik guitarist Remi (Adam Rowland).

“It was like riding a roller coaster. And yes, it was a lengthy voyage. I’m glad I had the chance to explore such significant material as an actor, says Godwin.

I got into acting to tell important tales and to bring attention to issues within society that needed to be solved, so it wasn’t what I had anticipated when I originally joined, but when I learned that I was receiving a domestic violence plot, I was really grateful.

With a recent plot line in which Felicity (Jacqui Purvis) is raped after someone put GBH into her drink, the venerable Australian drama has brought attention to the practice of sexual abusers spiking drinks.

Godwin is quite pleased with the way the show’s creators have handled these storylines.

She thinks it’s excellent that “Home And Away” is bringing up these issues.

“I know for the domestic violence storyline, the script department did a lot of research to make sure that what they were putting on the page and giving to us actors was in line with what happens in those kinds of relationships.”

Godwin says she has received nothing but positive feedback from viewers.

In addition, Home And Away’s multiple nominations at the upcoming Logie Awards are a strong indication that after 35 years on screen, the beachside drama is still resonating with viewers.

Ada Nicodemou, Emily Symons, and Lynne McGranger, seasoned cast members, are up for the most popular actress award. James Stewart and Ray Meagher are among the contenders for the most popular actor title. The show itself is a finalist in the category for most popular drama, mini-series, or telemovie.

The Logie nomination is the cherry on top for Godwin, who claims that both personally and professionally the past year has been fruitful.

She adds, “I feel like, in terms of my career, I’ve learned a great deal,” and that her experiences have also inspired her to engage with neighborhood organizations that support those who have experienced domestic abuse.

When I was doing my research for the plot, I listened to many psychologists’ interviews, spoke with a man at White Ribbon, and worked incredibly hard to do my best to present the issue honestly.

“I would love to continue to assist and contribute to the discussion in any way I can. I just participated in a walk to benefit a wonderful organization that truly assists women and children in fleeing danger.

She has high expectations that in the coming months Bree’s life would be a little bit happier.

The plucky doctor has just seen off predatory interloper Mercedes, who was after her man Remi, and now looks set for a period of romantic bliss.

Fans, it appears, have different plans. For the writers to connect the doctor with former paramedic Xander Delaney (Luke Van Os), there is sort of an online campaign in progress.

“I do giggle a little when I think about that. What did they use as coinage? That’s all, Brander,” Godwin adds.

“I believe that fan engagement is wonderful. That’s fantastic, but Remi and Bree seem to have a pretty unique bond, in my opinion. Just have to wait and see, I guess.

Bree has been trying really hard to regain her wholeness, and I pray that the day will come when she truly knows independence, joy, and wholeness as she develops and thrives.

I won’t say too much, but I do believe that there are some happy things on the horizon.
