Home And Away star Marilyn Chambers appeared on the soap for over a decade and also had a seven year stint on Emmerdale – here we look at the star’s life off-screen
When Emily Symons took on the role of hairdresser Marilyn Chambers on Home and Away in 1989, it became her breakthrough role.
The actress, now 54, played the position for ten years before leaving for a number of other roles, including a stint on Emmerdale. However, in 2010, she made a comeback to her Home and Away role.
The celebrity also appeared on Dancing On Ice in 2007, but was eliminated after a skate-off against Duncan James of Blue.
Emily returned to her native Australia to repeat her Home and Away role after spending years living in the UK and seven years playing Louise Appleton on Emmerdale. She has since made her home there.
Emily has had two marriages off-screen, the first to percussionist Nick Lipscombe, whom she met in London in the early 1990s.
Speaking about her relationship to The Mirror in 2002, she said: “I got married at 23 and I thought that was the be-all and end-all.
“But we weren’t a good match and I was far too young. I valued having a partner so highly that I sacrificed my professional goals. It took me a while to come to that realization.
She married Lorenzo Smith, a descendant of English stationery billionaire W. H. Smith and the son of Viscount Hambleden, in her second marriage.
From 2003 to 2005, the couple was married for two years. After getting married in Henley-on-Thames, they spent a blissful honeymoon in Positano.
However, the marriage only lasted two years before the pair decided to get a divorce. Later, she revealed how the couple’s IVF journey to conceive children had strained their marriage.
She stated: “I found it soul-destroying — it was like having PMT, but a million times worse,” in an interview with the Sunday Mirror in 2007. In the end, it ruined our relationship. After learning that we had failed a second time, we split up in June 2005.
Emily met Premier League footballer Matt Le Tissier in the late 1990s while she was playing in a production of Goldilocks in Southampton. They were engaged before she wed Lorenzo Smith.
The couple started dating in 1999 and became engaged six months later, but the marriage was never consummated. Even though Emily is best recognized for her work on Home and Away, she also appeared for a while on Emmerdale as Louise Appleton, a bartender at The Woolpack Pub.
Emily fell in love with co-star Matthew King when she was working on the show. The two dated for 15 months and even sang a duet on Celebrity Stars In Their Eyes.
However, the relationship ended just before Emily competed on Dancing on Ice in 2007.
Paul Jackson, the programming director at Nova Entertainment Group, later became Emily’s love, and the two started dating in 2010.
Additionally, Emily and Paul welcomed their son Henry through IVF in 2015.
When asked about her son by New Idea, Emily remarked, “I really believed it couldn’t happen and I was too old.
“I believed it to be impossible, but it’s not. Really, I had given up because I believed I had exhausted all of our options. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the entire procedure, my suggestion is to persevere.
Sadly, the couple separated about a year after Henry was born.
