Coronation Street bosses have reportedly made a major change to the soap which has left some of the cast ‘panicking’ about their future on the cobbles

After learning that their superiors are attempting to cut costs, Coronation Street stars are tense.

The number of people that appear in each episode is reportedly something that ITV executives are aiming to reduce. There are rumors that they intend to go “minimal” and eliminate activities like chatting at the Rovers Return.

Apparently, several members of the team who profit from each scene were offended by the claimed method.

The management have opted to adopt a lot more minimum approach to narratives coming forward, and they are reducing the amount of actors who feature in them, a source close to The Mirror said. Fewer actors are paid to be on set because a big portion of the group is paid by scene.”

They went on to say that with a “massive” cast on the soap opera, people are terrified about what the cuts would imply for their futures. Since some of the team hasn’t been filming for weeks, it’s rumored that people are speaking candidly about their worries.

According to a source, there can be huge cost reductions in areas like transport for stars to set, hair and makeup, and lighting by reducing the number of actors per scene. They continued: “The more these costs are reduced, the more likely it is that we can meet them with our in-house team, whereas previously the show has leaned heavily on freelance help, which is much more expensive.”

Insiders have disclosed that rather than cutting back on the number of weekly episodes, ITV soap opera bosses, who are under a great deal of pressure given the beloved soap opera’s viewership of little over three million, have opted for a more efficient approach. They have emphasized in talks with senior management how important it is to cause the least amount of disruption to the spectators.

Prominent actors such as Bill Roache and Barbara Knox, who gained recognition for their parts as Ken Barlow and Rita Tanner, respectively, are paid on a complete compensation package and are compensated for all hours worked. While a minimal amount of work is guaranteed, the majority of the actors receives compensation dependent on the length of time they spend filming.

Former Emmerdale producer Kate Brooks, who was recently appointed as head of production, will take over this month following the promotion of former head of production Iain McLeod to executive producer of ongoing drama. Kate gushed last month: “It’s the ultimate ‘pinch me’ moment to be asked to produce a show I’ve revered for such a long time—Corrie has lit up my living room since I was a kid.” As we move into the next chapter, I want to make sure that this wonderful show stays strong and continues to flourish.

Corrie’s official statement was, “We do not comment on production schedules or costs.”
