EastEnders has hinted at Chrissie Watts’ forthcoming return to the show in scenes that aired tonight.

Soap bosses announced that the 00s Walford icon – played by Tracy-Ann Oberman – would be making a comeback after 20 years earlier this summer

Having been imprisoned for the murder of her husband Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) back in 2005 and with no current ties to Albert Square, fans have been speculating as to what exactly brings her back to Walford.

One of the most popular theories is that she is somehow connected to the latest additions to the Mitchell family, Teddy (Roland Manookian), Harry (Elijah Holloway) and Barney (Lewis Bridgeman).

The trio were introduced earlier this year as the long-lost relatives of Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), with his father Stevie (Alan Ford) having had a secret second family.

They’ve since settled on the Square, buying No. 1 from killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith), but still little has been revealed about their backstory.

However, in Thursday’s episode of the BBC soap fans saw how Harry tell his father and that ‘you know who’ has been sniffing around their old place to find out where they’ve moved to.

Could ‘you know who’ be none other than Chrissie?

In a statement announcing her return to the role, Tracy-Ann said earlier this year: ‘Chrissie Watts was such a great character to play – a victim or a villain. She is a real fan favourite so, when Chris Clenshaw asked me to come back and re-visit her and see what has happened in the last 19 years, I jumped at the chance.

‘The scripts are fantastic and I hope the viewers enjoy her as much as I am enjoying playing her again.’

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw added that he was ‘keeping tight-lipped on the exact circumstances relating to her return’, but said: ‘What I can promise is that it’s never quiet when Chrissie Watts is around…’
