The soap star said her body “was poisoning itself”

Details about Gemma Oaten’s potentially fatal illness were revealed on Lorraine.

On today’s episode of the ITV talk program, Carol Vorderman spoke with the soap opera star. The 38-year-old actress is well known for her roles as Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale and Isla Haywood in Coronation Street.

Carol was informed by Gemma that she had been experiencing cramps and nausea for some time but had attributed them to stress and anxiety. She was isolating, though, when her mother persuaded her to get medical attention in April after she tested positive for a coronavirus.

After being sent to the hospital, Gemma was found to have milk alkali syndrome, a dangerous kidney ailment. She said that she learned at the hospital that the condition was brought on by years of consuming calcium carbonate in the form of indigestion pills.

In the past, Gemma has been transparent about her 13-year struggle with anorexia and bulimia. The soap opera diva described how she used the pills to treat acid reflux.

“I started taking magnesium approximately four weeks before I went to the hospital because, once again, I was exhausted anxious and it had calcium carbonate in it,” she continued, “since I was so terrified of relapsing and being sick that I used to take those.”

My calcium levels increased to a risky level even though I was completely unaware of anything that was

high point, which also causes the acid-base to become alkaline. I was unaware that my body was essentially poisoning itself until the ambulance arrived.”
Gemma’s oxygen level was at 20% and her renal function was at 8%. After receiving medical care, Gemma is finally on the road to recovery.

The SEED charity, which offers assistance and understanding to those with eating problems, is managed and supported by Gemma. She spoke candidly about how challenging the condition had been. She uttered: “If more people used early intervention, they wouldn’t experience pain for as long as they do now. I want no one to experience what I have, so I tell my tale.”even though I’ve had a 15-year recovery. I recently learned that I may not be able to have children because I experienced milk alkali syndrome while trying to do something that I thought was proper but wasn’t. Because of years of damage to my teeth, I will need extensive dental surgery tomorrow.”
