To the dismay of fans, Sean Wilson allegedly quit Coronation Street on ITV, compelling the show’s executives to kill Martin Platt’s plot.

The recent moves taken by ITV executives have angered Coronation Street viewers, who have pleaded for improvements. It coincides with reports that Sean Wilson quit the serial opera, compelling the executives to scrap Martin Platt’s plot.

In July it was confirmed that Sean would be returing to the cobbles as part of Gail Platt’s exit after 50 years on the cobbles. However, a representative for the soap said that the actor left “for personal reasons” last week.

Reportedly, none of Sean’s scenes will be aired, with Helen Worth’s character, Gail, having her entire exit storyline being frantically rewritten by bosses. An ITV spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”

But after being excited about the soap legend’s return, only to have it abrubtly halted, fans have been less than happy. Some have questioned what is happening to the ITV soap while others begged for it to “be sorted out”.

One wrote on forum: “What the hell is going on at Corrie?! It’s crisis after crisis. I really feel for Helen as she deserves nothing but an amazing and fitting exit which is looking very unlikely.”

Another asked: “What is going on behind the scenes at Corrie?” A third threatened that “heads will roll”, saying: “Heads are going to roll for this if true.

“This will cause a heck of a lot of trouble. They had better get on the front foot and fast with this before it damages the entire thing.”

Someone else called Corrie an “embarrassment” as they wrote: “ITV needs to step in and sort out this abysmal show once and for all!!! It’s an embarrassment compared to Classic Corrie which has a great script and great cast.”

Before making the sudden decision to pull the plug on his return, as Sean picked up his first scripts to start shooting, he said: “It was great to be invited back to Coronation Street again, to contribute to Helen’s exit story.

“We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline. Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and in a way, I’ll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family.

“It’s just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe… I’m looking forward to reuniting with my TV family.”

Sean played the role of Martin for 20 years from 1985 to 2005, before he and his family emigrated to New Zealand in 2018 and he paid one final visit to Weatherfield before his departure to make his peace with David, who was upset that his dad was leaving the country.
