Coronation Street’s Gail Platt is saying her goodbyes to the cobbles this year after 50 years on the ITV soap.

Corrie fans have ‘worked out’ where Gail Platt is swapping the cobbles for as her exit looms.

It was announced this year that actress Helen Worth will be leaving after 50 years via a statement from ITV. At the time, bosses promised viewers her departing storyline would be an emotional one.

It was also revealed the legend’s shock exit comes as part of a “major” new storyline for the Platt family. What’s more, this week it was revealed that Martin Platt is heading back, as part of Gail’s storyline.

The character, played by Sean Wilson, is returning six years after he last returned to Weatherfield. He begins filming today (Wednesday, July 24) and will first appear on screen in October as part of Gail’s exit.

He said: “It was great to be invited back to Coro St again, to contribute to Helen’s exit story. We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline.”

“Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and in a way, I’ll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family.

“It’s just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe. I’m looking forward to reuniting with my TV family.”

However, following the news of Martin’s return, fans are convinced they have ‘rumbled’ how he plays into Gail leaving the soap.

Over on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, viewers shared their thoughts on Martin’s return for Gail’s exit.

Discussing Martin, who emigrated to New Zealand in 2018, and Gail, one fan mused: “Maybe they’re just friends and decide to go travelling together! I think Gail would like to return to Thailand.”

Someone else added: “That’s a good idea, she went to Thailand a few years ago if I remember correctly.” A third wrote: “It would give her chance to come back as well.”

Gail took a break from Weatherfield back in 2021 and jetted off to the other side of the world, to Thailand.

Actor Sean, who left the soap in 2005 to become a cheese-maker, played Martin for 20 years from 1985 to 2005. Martin and his family emigrated to New Zealand in 2018 and he paid one final visit to Weatherfield before his departure to make his peace with David, who was upset that his dad was leaving the country.
