Legend of Coronation Street Sally Ann Matthews has spurred speculation that, after 38 years, she is departing the program.
The actress, who is most known for her part as Jenny Connor, the landlady in the ITV soap opera, made her debut as Rita Fairclough’s (Barbara Knox) foster daughter in 1986. She stayed in that role for the next five years before making a cameo in 1993.
Jenny returned to the streets in 2015 and quickly fell into an unpleasant romantic relationship with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) before moving there more permanently the following year.
But after Sally Ann appeared to confirm an impending departure on Instagram Live, it appears that she may soon be leaving Weatherfield for new pastures.
“On Saturday, we’re going to go off on the boat; we’re very lucky to go and do that, take the boat up river,” she said in response to a question about her ongoing vacation plans.
“On Saturday, we’re going to go off on the boat; we’re very lucky to go and do that, take the boat up river,” she said in response to a question about her ongoing vacation plans.
“I’m going to do nothing but relax on the boat and do nothing at all. After that, I’m going to return to Cyprus and do nothing at all. Who knows, maybe I’ll get a job and someone will hire me!”
Since Jenny hasn’t been on our screens much this year, many worried viewers started to wonder if she had left.
“Are you gone from the Street?”Hold on…the following query…All of a sudden, the questions are moving more slowly! She gave a little chirp, obviously hinting at a break.
“I suppose I should probably go now…”
“We haven’t seen much of Jenny for a while,” she replied, reading back another question. “No, you’re not going to be seeing Jenny for quite a long while, so that’s that!”
A definitive response was sought by many, but Sally Ann was hesitant to provide it.
“Well, you’ll see Jenny once more, but it won’t be for very long!”
“Well, it seems like now would be a good time to leave; I believe I could have done fairly well in life!”
Since Jenny lost her husband Johnny (Richard Hawley) in a bizarre drowning accident in a sewer system, the character has played a major role in the show.
Later on, Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), her ex-stepdaughter, would show up and persuade her to use money pilfered from the Underworld factory to repurchase the Rovers Return in recent months.
Allison King’s character, Carla Connor, the other stepdaughter, discovered the two women’s deceit and demanded that they arrange a payment schedule so she could get her money back.
After her ex-boyfriend Leo was killed by serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), she found herself in danger as well.
The long-running drama would suffer greatly from Sally Ann’s departure, especially considering that it came so soon after Gail Platt star Helen Worth announced her 50-year departure.
