Coronation Street fans have been left ‘sad’ over the number of characters said to be leaving the soap, with six characters tipped to leave in the coming months
Coronation Street fans have been responding to the wave of cast departures following recent announcements and reports.
Although some exits are yet to be officially confirmed by the show, hints and teasers suggest several familiar faces will soon be leaving the cobbles. The soap has also confirmed that certain characters are set to exit in the upcoming weeks or months.
Three actors have announced their departure, while two others have recently indicated that their time on the show is not indefinite. Despite one actor denying rumours of an exit a year ago, it now appears they will indeed be leaving the show.
The most significant departure is that of soap legend Gail Platt, with Helen Worth exiting the role after a 50-year tenure. This news has left viewers heartbroken, with filming for her exit storyline already underway.
Not included in the six departures is Sean Wilson’s character Martin Platt, who was supposed to return to leave with Gail. However, he exited the show during filming before his return even aired, resulting in a rewrite of the storyline, reports the Mirror.
In addition to Gail’s exit, Paul Foreman, played by Peter Ash, is also set to leave the show in heartbreaking scenes. The beloved character was diagnosed with motor neurone disease late last year and learned he did not have long to live, with his final scenes already filmed.
The recent departure of beloved characters has left fans reeling, especially given the heart-wrenching storylines. Joel Deering and Rowan Cunliffe, two antagonists whose exits are eagerly anticipated, are rumoured to be leaving soon.
Reports had surfaced weeks earlier that actors Calum Lill and Emryhs Cooper were set to depart, with their final scenes allegedly already in the can.
The storyline sees Joel’s heinous deeds being exposed, while con artist Rowan might finally meet his match in an upcoming twist. Another character bidding farewell is Max Turner’s ex and Betsy Swain’s friend Sabrina, as the actress behind the role announced her departure after wrapping up filming.
Luana Santos expressed her gratitude on Instagram for her stint on the show, prompting a wave of fan disappointment at her exit. Comments poured in lamenting her departure, with one fan exclaiming: “Noooo Sabrina’s left the show!” and another remarking on the lost potential: “Ah that’s a shame I think Sabrina had potential.”
Speculation about Beth Tinker’s return was fuelled by reports last December that Lisa George had left the series. Upcoming spoilers hint at a coerced exit from Weatherfield for Beth, aligning with whispers of a summer goodbye.
The flurry of exits has elicited varied responses from viewers, with one expressing sadness over the impending departure of six characters, while another voiced dissatisfaction with Beth’s send-off, stating: “I think it’s a poor exit for her.”
A fan expressed their desire for a character’s departure, stating: “Rowan needs to exit stage left IMMEDIATELY! ! !” Meanwhile, Lucy Fallon, known for her role as Bethany Platt, is set to take a temporary hiatus from the show due to her pregnancy. She reassured fans on Instagram, saying: “Lots of Corrie related Q’s. I won’t be away for toooo long and I am returning after I pop the baby out xx.”
Additionally, another departure has been confirmed with Stu Carpenter’s character being written out, as actor Bill Fellows wraps up his final scenes.
