Coronation Street reveals that Evelyn and Roy are fighting about potatoes when she moves in.

On Coronation Street, Roy Cropper (David Neilson) just developed a solution to a particularly unique set of housing issues.

Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) was refusing to live with Cassie (Claire Sweeney), who had moved in with Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and the girls, but doing so required her to remain at the precinct flat, where she huddled close to a hot water bottle due to the less than cozy surroundings.

Evelyn could live with Roy, and Lauren (Cait Fitton), who was also looking for housing, could occupy the precinct apartment, according to Roy’s plan.

Roy has shared a variety of flats over the years. Of course, there was his devoted wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh). However, Carla Connor (Alison King) and Roy’s niece Nina (Mollie Gallagher) have also lived there for extended periods of time. Even Ken Barlow, played by William Roache, spent time there.

Thus, Roy has demonstrated himself to be willing to adjust to the demands and ways of people who are significantly different from himself, while being one of the Street’s most eccentric personalities.

But Evelyn Plummer is on an entirely different level. And the episode that aired on Wednesday, September 13, did not start off well for life with the well-known cantankerous great-grandmother.

She was first awakened by Roy listening to the Shipping Forecast at a very early hour. She finds it anything but calming, whereas he finds it comforting when others talk about “German bights and dogging.” Evelyn had a point to make and wasn’t willing to be silenced, so Roy volunteered to listen with headphones.

She flounced back to the apartment, ordering Roy to go shopping because his cabinets were empty.

Later, Tyrone advised Evelyn to be kind with Roy and emphasized that he was the one helping her, not the other way around. As a result, she left to go shopping alone.

Roy was the one to point the finger when she came back. Evelyn informed him that they would be enjoying lamb chops, jacket potatoes, and salad.

Delicious, he proclaimed. ‘Potentially.’

Was he questioning Evelyn’s ability to cook? Okay, no. He was irritated by her choice of spud. These were only typical baked potatoes, not his first choice: “Maris Piper.” Jacket potatoes like a Rolls Royce.

Evelyn stormed off, but she later came back and apologized for “stalking out” while carrying a bag of Roy’s favorite root veggies.

He apologized, “I’m sorry I was so lofty on the potato front.”

There’s nothing wrong with understanding your preferences, she assured him.

It appeared that harmony had been restored, but by the time they returned to the apartment, the topic of the shipping forecast had come up again, Evelyn was becoming agitated, and Roy was attempting to maintain order.

They’ll make the best flatmates if they can get through the adjustment period without killing each other, and in the meantime, for the spectators, they’re comic gold.
