Actor Calum Lill, who portrays wicked solicitor Joel Deering on Coronation Street, has shared details about his sinister new plot on the ITV soap opera.

Calum Lill of Coronation Street has revealed that he was given a severe warning by the showrunners before he ever set foot on the cobbles.

The actor, who plays the cunning lawyer in the ITV soap opera, was shocked to learn that his character is expecting a child with Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) in a recent storyline surprise.

A sinister plot involving Lauren’s grooming and abuse has entangled Lill’s character, as horrifying flashback scenes have illustrated.

Now that Lauren’s pregnancy has been made public, there is a real chance that his horrible deeds may come to light and be proven.

In an interview with ITV’s This Morning, Calum discussed his difficult role: “From the email for the screen test they were like ‘you just need to be aware it’s going to get very dark’ so I had one script which was him being nice and charming and one that was him being not so much, so when I finally got the call saying I got it i thought I’ve got a big undertaking now.”

Lauren managed to get away from Joel in a shocking turn of events on Tuesday’s episode, but he is determined to find her again next week.

Joel’s fiancée, Dee-Dee Bailey (played by Channique Sterling-Brown), is also searching for Lauren, and as the Mirror notes, she unintentionally provided the villain with vital information that could aid him in finding her first.

“It’s amazing to play a baddie on a soap opera, but I didn’t just want to play some moustache-twirling villain you know,” Calum added in his comment. Since it’s a serious subject, it was crucial to me and the other cast members of Corrie to make it genuine and true to reality rather than corny.”

Insinuating that Joel may go to considerable measures to maintain his secrecy during Lauren’s pregnancy, he said, “There’s proof that the stakes have only increased, and we’ve seen that Joel lacks empathy and is very driven. I believe the worst is yet to come for Joel.” He will only become worse.”

Joel and Dee-Dee are getting married on September 27 in the next episodes. But it’s unclear if they’ll make it to the altar as Joel’s secrets start to come to light.
