Mason from Coronation Street has stirred up a lot of controversy, but the bad boy may be getting a major new plot.
Mason Radcliffe might be the focus of a new soap opera that replaces Coronation Street.
Last year, Luca Toolan’s character, the bully, came to the cobbles and created a lot of commotion. Watching him torment Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall), the little son of Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon), appalled viewers of the soap opera.
And things took a dramatic turn when Mason pulled a knife on Liam. Things got so bad for Liam though, that he thought about taking his own life.
However, in April, Mason was sent to a Young Offenders centre for threatening Liam with the knife. During the trial at court, Dylan bravely stood up to Mason, testifying against him.
But over in the soap last month, Mason was back on the cobbles, after getting released from the Young Offenders centre. His return ruffled plenty of feathers – with Liam and Dylan left shaken.
Meanwhile, Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows) has shown compassion for Mason, and managed to get him a job at his restaurant. The news of Mason working at Speed Daal left several residents angry.
But Stu insisted that he could see that Mason was trying to turn his life around. Mason has also gotten close with troublemaker Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) the daughter of DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).
However, this week, Mason shuts down Betsy, insisting he’s not interested in pursuing her. And now, fans reckon that the soap has lined up a new storyline for Mason.
On a Reddit thread, one fan shared their theory that Mason could potentially come out as asexual – making him Corrie’s first asexual character. Referencing Mason turning down Betsy next week, the fan wrote: “Do you think we’re heading for a coming out storyline? Or is he simply just not interested in her?
“Maybe he’ll eventually develop feelings and there’ll be a love triangle with Dylan. I know not everyone fancies everyone, but she does seem his type, unless he really does want to change and sees her as a bad influence.
“A few people have suspected this, esp as he seems to (pretend to?) be homophobic. He could even be aromantic/ asexual (I don’t think Corrie’s ever had an established one).”
The fan added: “Samia L (Maria) stated that something ‘big’ will happen later this year. Maybe it’s something similar to Lucas & Dillon.” Back in July, Maria actor Samia revealed to Inside Soap that Mason’s return is “going to lead onto something quite big later in the year.”
Over on Reddit, another fan shared a theory and penned: “It will probably be a homosexuality coming out storyline where he has feelings for Liam which will be super awkward and weird both in the show and as a viewer. But they SHOULD go for an asexuality storyline because it’s very underrepresented.”
A third wrote: “Could the reason Mason is not interested in Betsy be because he is attracted to somebody else, like for instance, Liam? To me, it would explain, partly his bullying of Liam rather than getting too matey with him.“
Another viewer mused: “If he was gay, there could be a storyline where Sean feels sorry for him and helps him come to terms with things.” However, someone else was not keen on Mason confiding in Sean, if he was gay or asexual. The viewer penned: “Ugh, plausible as that is, I just groaned and wouldn’t that just be a kick in the head to Dylan, from his perspective anyway? Nothing surprises me about the writing anymore tbh.”
