Actor Oliver Farnworth played Andy Carver in Coronation Street for three years and was involved in some of the ITV soap’s most dramatic storylines.
Recently, it was announced that actor Oliver Farnworth will be playing newcomer John Sugden in Emmerdale. However, ITV viewers may recognise the star from his time in Coronation Street where he played Andy Carver back in 2014.
Initially, ITV fans saw him pretending to be Gavin, the lost son of Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis). The pair grew a close bond and developed a relationship, albeit under false pretences, although Michael’s wife Gail Platt (Helen Worth) was involved in covering up the truth.
During his time on the cobbles, he started working at the Bistro and struck up a relationship with Steph Britton (Tisha Merry). Gail decided to keep quiet about Andy’s real identity, in fear that the truth could kill Michael because of the problems he has with his heart.
However, things took a tragic turn when his real son died from the same condition, which resulted in Michael’s ex-wife Susan Meldrum (Meriel Scholfield) sending a photo album of their son’s life to him.
At first, he was beside himself flicking through pages of Gavin as a baby, although the older he became in the images, the clearer it was that the son he was getting to know was an imposter.
Heartbroken by the deceit, Michael ended things with Gail for not telling him the truth but was able to eventually forgive Andy and the pair patched up their relationship.
Although, things quickly took a drastic turn when serial killer Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) became involved with their lives.
When Michael had suspicions that criminal Pat was trying to scam people, he went into his office to find evidence.
He was caught in the act by Pat who made it clear Michael wouldn’t be getting out of the situation alive. As Michael tried to flee for his life, he was stopped when his heart condition flared up while Pat watched and allowed him to die.
Believing Pat had something to do with his fake dad’s death, Andy was hell-bent on getting revenge and decided to take action.
Although his plan to turn Pat in to the police went sour when the criminal realised what his intentions were, resulting in a tense showdown.
With a fight breaking out in Pat’s office, fans feared Andy was dead after he was whacked over the head with a laptop.
However, he hauled him into a van and taken to an abandoned house where he was chained up for months.
Desperate for freedom, Andy eventually made a deal with Pat that he’d take care of another prisoner for him and allow the criminal to observe it, meaning he’d have something over him should he go to the police.
Agreeing, Pat eventually made Andy shoot his old business partner who had wronged him called Vinny Ashford (Ian Kelsey).
Turning the gun on his captor, Pat managed to talk Andy down on getting revenge and he was able to get a hold of the weapon, killing Andy with a single shot.
Despite his best to cover up the two bodies, both were eventually uncovered in 2018 and residents gathered for Andy’s funeral.
