Starring in BBC Two’s Henpocalypse since 2023, Danny Dyer’s new project was announced to be short-lived as a Beeb insider revealed the show wouldn’t return for a second season.

Danny Dyer‘s stint in Henpocalypse! has come to an abrupt end as the BBC Two programme has been scrapped after only one series.

The former EastEnders star, 47, ventured to pastures new following his dramatic exit from the BBC One soap, where he gained recognition pulling pints at The Vic, portraying pub landlord Mick Carter.

This led him straight to the set of Henpocalypse! which saw five women headed out on a hen-do, only for the celebrations to be interrupted by the end of the world, forcing the group to wait it all out in an isolated cottage in Wales.

Danny made an astonishing cameo in a series of dream sequences, including one featuring him dressed up as a hunky knight. He shared the spotlight with The Responder‘s Elizabeth BerringtonDoctor Who and Piglets star Callie Cooke, Lauren O’Rourke, Doctors and Line Of Duty actress Lucie Shorthouse and Mariam Haque, among others.

Unfortunately, Danny’s new show didn’t get the recognition expected, prompting bosses to axe the programme after one season, The Sun reports. A source at the BBC said: “It just didn’t get the audience figures to justify it returning.”

The actor was particularly keen on the role, which he deemed was a “fictionalised and heightened version of himself.” Speaking of the show ahead of its first airing, he’d said: “When I saw the pilot for Henpocalypse! I pi***** myself laughing and I was so honoured to be asked to be a part of such an amazing job. You’re all gonna f****** love it – it’s hilarious.”

Series creator Caroline Moran had also confessed she’d written Danny Dyer into her script before he was even approached for the show. “There’s only one Danny Dyer. He’s fantastic. He was everything and more than I could’ve hoped for”, she’d said. “I emailed him, begging, going, ‘You’re amazing, you’re a national treasure – what do you say?’ He was up for it.”

While close to a million viewers had tuned into the series’ first episode in August, 2023, audiences dwindled throughout the first season of Henpocalypse!

One of Danny’s newest roles was revealed in June, 2024, with an exclusive look at the Disney+ show Rivals, set for release later this year and a trailer revealed that the actor had drastically changed his look for the job.

The teaser and snaps of Danny Dyer in the upcoming eight-part show, which is part of Dame Jilly Cooper‘s Rutshire Chronicles series, have shown that he grew a thick moustache for his new role, away from the stubble he sported in Walford.
