While Joe Sugden was said to have died in an off-screen car crash, Emmerdale fans have pleaded with soap bosses to bring him back as another Sugden is due to make his entrance.

One Emmerdale viewer triggered a wave of reactions on Reddit as they demanded: “bring back Joe Sugden.”

Known as the happier member of the Sugden family and the younger brother of Jack in the ITV soap, Joe Sugden featured on the Yorkshire-based programme from its early beginnings in 1972 to 1994 and was killed off-screen in a car crash the following year.

But with the arrival of another member of the Sugden clan, many soap fans are keen to see Joe make his return from the grave, some convinced he could have even faked his death with the help of pals Annie and Amos.

Speculation began as mentioned, when one soap fan begged for Joe Sugden’s return, before pointing out inconsistencies in their summary of his death: “I’ve included what is said on the Emmerdale Wiki about Joes death and there are definitely some loop holes there that could be an excuse to bring him back”

One detail notably caught the fan’s attention as they remembered Amos claiming Joe had asked him to make sure free drinks were handed out in The Woolpack if anything was to ever happen to him. Amos admitted he’d found the request strange due to Joe being likely to outlive him.

A viewer commented: “I agree it was a mistake to kill him off, but it would be massively OOC for Joe to do that imo. Plus I’m not sure there’s enough people he knew left for a comeback to mean anything. This could’ve worked maybe when Jack was alive, but not now sadly.”

“I’ve wanted a return for Joe for a while now and just like with EE and Dirty Den and the rest of them on there, there’s always a way round it and your’s is plausible so why not…?”, a second TV fan wrote.

They added: “I thought this new Sugden character maybe the vehicle that brought Joe back but alas it seems it has more to do with Jack than Joe but who knows what they have up their Emmerdale sleeves…”

Another even ignited hope to see Ryan Hawley reprise his own role in the long-running show as they added: “My little head canon is that Joe, with Annie and Amos’s help, faked his death to avoid any more of Jack’s drama.”

“As Joe had a history of living in Europe and working for big companies, like NY Estates. He could have changed his name and worked for them as they were focused on Europe and the US.”

“If they brought Joe back, it would, for me, have to be with him helping Robert, as he always had his nephew’s back when they were in the village together”, they concluded.

In 2019, Joe Sugden actor Frazer Hines advocated for a return for his Emmerdale alter ego, telling The Daily Mirror: “The fans always want me back.”

“They say, ‘Why don’t you come back for six months as a guest?’ And I would do that. I left Emmerdale because I got sick of going to work when it was dark and coming home when it was dark. I’d just got married and owned a stud farm. And so I said I would leave.”

This comes after actor Oliver Farnworth was announced to join the soap’s line-up as the enigmatic John Sugden as Victoria Sugden (portrayed by Isabel Hodgins) will discover the existence of one of her undisclosed relatives.
