Following the actor’s death in late 2018, the soap opera executives declared their desire to provide a “fitting tribute” for the role.
Fans of EMMERDALE will soon have to bid a painful goodbye to one of the most cherished characters on the program, since the actor who portrayed him departed from this life in December 2023.
Producers of the soap opera have previously stated that following Steve Halliwell’s passing, Zak Dingle will be laid to rest on screen.
When Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) made the decision to travel to Scotland to see his uncle Zak, the depressing plot started.
His daughter Debbie, who resides with Zak, called him with concern, so he decided to make the journey.
Cain informed Chas and Belle Dingle that Zak’s health had taken a concerning turn during Wednesday’s episode.
Belle expressed her want to see her father after receiving the news, but Cain played it down, telling them he would only be gone for a few days.
In 1994, Steve Halliwell gave birth to the character of Zak.
The last time Zak appeared was in June 2023, just before Steve took a hiatus due to health concerns. Steve passed away in December at the age of 77.
“He was making us laugh to the end,” his family wrote in a statement at the time.
“Family was everything to him; he was the most wonderful father and grandfather you could ever want for.
“We want to express our gratitude to the amazing team at Wheatfield Hospice and St. James Hospital for their compassion and caring during his last days. He only wanted to celebrate a life well spent; he didn’t want sorrow.”
His character will be laid to rest in a “hugely fitting” homage this year, Emmerdale executives have previously stated.
Producer Sophie Roper of the soap opera revealed: “The Dingles have been the core of our program for thirty years and will always be.”
“And as many of you are undoubtedly aware, Steve passed away very sadly not too long ago.
“So we’re going to be marking Zak’s passing, iconic Zak Dingle character, in the coming months with a Dingle funeral.”
