‘I realised that I was using something that in the moment made me feel better but yet over time was making me feel worse.’

The way Tammin Sursok felt about alcohol changed over time, and she ultimately made the decision to embrace sobriety.

Despite never having a “complicated” addiction, the former Home and Away actress claimed that she would “count down” to the weekend when she could feel “normal” after drinking.

Sursok decided to start a sober journey a year ago. She claimed to have a new lease on life and to have experienced greater joy and happiness.

“You’ve been sober for a year?,” Sursok wrote as she shared an Instagram montage featuring some of the year’s best moments. “Life without alcohol must be awful.”

Her caption opened, “I don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll try, so here goes!”

If you followed me for a long time, you know that I’ve teetered on the idea of ‘sober curious’ for a long time now.

“My relationship with alcohol hasn’t really been that complicated.

“I’ve never felt like I had to have it or that I had a problem, but I did feel like I needed a glass of wine to help my limbic system relax during stressful and anxious times.”

The Pretty Little Liars actress claimed that she was “counting down the days” until she could have alcohol on Fridays and Saturdays due to her problematic drinking habits.

Sursok claimed that she would “feel normal” after drinking on those days.

The celebrity said, “I realized that I was using something that, while it made me feel better in the moment, was actually making me feel worse over time.”

Alcohol increases dopamine levels, which is great for those like myself who suffer from low dopamine levels since it makes us feel calm, collected, and, as I mentioned before, “normal.”

However, it did not and does not endure.

“What goes up must come down, and dopamine drops dramatically after drinking any alcohol—way lower than it was before—so I would end up feeling way worse than I had before.”

Sursok expressed her “apprehension” about leading a clean life, wondering how she would fit in and enjoy herself at gatherings.

“How am I going to dance and feel energetic? What are people going to think of me?

However, I can genuinely state that I have experienced joy, happiness, and connection to an even larger extent.

“There’s nothing better than having the best time of your life, staying out until two in the morning, and then waking up the next day feeling calm, less nervous, and with a complete memory of the previous night’s events!”

Sursok stated that she “definitely feels like I’m on the right path” in her recovery, even though she is unsure of her future relationship with alcohol.

“Please DM me if you have any questions or would want more information about living a sober life.

“This year has been amazing, and I can’t wait for the next one!” She concluded by using the hashtags “#sober #sobercurious #alcohol #mentalhealthawareness.”

Many of the followers praised Sursok and shared their own sobriety achievements.

“Congratulations, I’ll have 16 years this month. Best thing I ever did for myself,” one said.

“10 years since I’ve had any alcohol, don’t miss it at all!! Was never a big drinker to begin with,” a second wrote.

“Fantastic work. And the best part of being sober is being 100 per cent present for our kiddos. I have way less brain fog, more energy and lost 13kg. It’s so worth it 🙌❤️,” added another.

“This is exactly what I’ve been trying to say when explaining how I feel after alcohol. You said it so perfectly. Im seriously considering doing the same for the exact same reasons. Thank you!!” a user said.
