John J. York’s announcement that he would be taking a brief break from GENERAL HOSPITAL worried some soap opera fans, and now, a week later, the actor has explained why. In a self-portrait video he uploaded to X, he asked, “Well hey, you guys, how you doing?” “It’s me. I promised to give you an update on why I’m taking a brief break from GH, and here it is.
I was given a diagnosis of multiple smoldering myeloma and myelodysplastic syndrome, also known as MDS, in December of last year, York continued. two diseases of the bone marrow and blood.”
In myelodysplastic syndrome, immature blood cells in the bone marrow fail to develop into healthy blood cells. A rare early form of multiple myeloma called smoldering multiple myeloma has the potential to turn into cancer if left untreated. Thankfully, there are remedies; York has already used some of them.

I’ve had numerous chemotherapy treatments and three bone marrow biopsies over the past several months, he admitted. In a few weeks, I have another one coming up. And my blood stem cell transplant is almost here. In order to locate a potential donor on their registry, I’ve been working with some wonderful people at Be The Match.

York appears to be in good spirits in his video, so he is approaching this fight in the right way. He assured her, “This isn’t goodbye, this is just so long.” I must take a break for at least three and possibly four months. However, I’ll return.
