On Sunday, Emily Weir made the difficult admission that last year was very difficult for her and that it caused her to have a “breakdown.”
The 32-year-old Home and Away actress claimed to the Herald Sun that anxiety and fatigue made life very challenging to handle.
I had a tremendously trying period both intellectually and emotionally. People refer to it as a breakdown, but I refer to it as a breakthrough, she said.
“I had a lot going on,” I said. Many of us entered some really bizarre mental states after Covid, and I had a particularly depressing stage.
Weir went on to say that a startling invitation from Channel Seven to participate in this season of Dancing With The Stars helped her rediscover her flow.
Dance tells a story about relying on your community for support and about surviving. All those emotions served as the fuel for this dance, and it was worthwhile.
Emily revealed to TV Week earlier this month that she used alcohol as a coping strategy when her parents divorced while she was in her early 20s, but she was able to stop before she was cast in Home and Away in 2019.
“I was clean and sober before I appeared on the show, but my difficulties didn’t end there.” Those monsters developed because I didn’t work on myself enough, she claimed.
Fortunately, Emily joined Alcoholics Anonymous and received support.
“I’ve learned to set boundaries and be kinder to myself over the last five years.” I’m thankful to be a part of Home and Away, and participating in DWTS is one of my all-time favorite experiences, she said.
Even after being sober for five years, Emily said in December that she still struggles to stay sober over the holiday season.
Even though she is “proud” of what she has accomplished, she claimed that Christmas still involves some amount of exclusion for her because she is unable to have fun like those around her.
There are several gatherings and social events. The reality is, I still occasionally feel excluded—not because others intentionally exclude me, but rather because I am not on their level,’ she admitted to The Daily Telegraph.
The soap actor, who plays restaurant owner Mackenzie Booth on Home and Away, continued by stating that it is “normal” for a sober person to feel conflicted about being “proud” while secretly wishing they weren’t.
Back in December, Emily admitted she still faces a struggle with maintaining her sobriety during the festive season, even after being sober for five years
