Fans took to Twitter to share their frustration

Fans of Coronation Street are certain that Deirdre Barlow will return to television, but if that happens, viewers have stated they would “stop watching.” One of the most recognizable characters from the ITV series was Deirdre, portrayed by Anne Kirkbride, who debuted in 1972.

Her unusual voice and large glasses helped people recognize her, and she quickly rose to fame in Weatherfield. Her turbulent life featured a brief affair with a younger man and her marriage to Ken Barlow (played by William Roache), providing viewers with a variety of dramatic and entertaining moments throughout the years.

On October 8, 2014, Deidre made her final appearance on the program before Anne took a leave of absence. Anne Kirkbride lost her fight with breast cancer in January of 2015.

However, admirers believe she might reappear as a terrifying storyline centers on Jane Danson’s Leanne Battersby. Leanne was tricked into joining a “self-help” gang this year by Rowan (Emrhys Cooper). It transpired that Leanne was conversing with an artificial intelligence (AI) doppelgänger of her deceased son, Oliver, created by The Institute. Leanne has been enlisting Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) in the group lately.

Amy was horrified to see a computer-generated version of her half-brother by Leanne in the most recent episode, which aired on July 20. However, viewers of Coronation Street have speculated that a possible plot point could involve an AI clone of Amy’s grandmother, Deirdre. “As soon as they mentioned Deirdre, I was like please god no, not an AI Deirdre!” wrote a Reddit user.

“I would stop watching at that point,” remarked another fan. Long before actors could register for the technology, Anne Kirkbride passed away.” Amy might have a breakdown, according to a third fan who said, “I swear if they show Amy AI Deirdre I think that might actually tip Amy over the edge she’s already freaked by Oliver.”

Reactions on Twitter were equally intense, with one tweet reading, “WTF the AI kid is back.” Deirdre, they better not be AI. A different admirer remarked, “I thought we was about to get AI Deirdre.”
