The David Platt actor also told his co-stars why there would have been a ‘problem’ if he hadn’t popped the question

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has revealed who ‘wasn’t sure’ his now-fiancée Hanni Treweek would say ‘yes’ to his proposal during a trip of a lifetime. It was confirmed back in June that the actor had popped the question to his long-term girlfriend Hanni while on a safari holiday in Tanzania.

Jack regularly updated his social media page with the magnificent animals they had spotted on safari before moving on to Zanzibar, where they were seen soaking up the sun on the beach.

It wasn’t until their incredible trip came to an end that Hanni revealed Jack, who is famed for playing David Platt in the ITV soap, had popped the question. She took to her Instagram page to share the exciting news, writing: “05.06.24 I said YES to forever!!!” alongside a picture of the loved-up pair and a glimpse at her new sparkler.

Jack has now shared details of the proposal for the first time, saying he ‘didn’t tell anyone’ about his plans to ask Hanni, who was none the wiser about what was to come, to marry him other than his mum and Hanni’s mum, who accompanied him to get the ring that now adorns her left hand.

He was talking about the romantic proposal to kick off the new series of the On the Sofa podcast he co-host with Corrie co-stars Colson Smith and Ben Price. Colson, famed for playing Craig Tinker in the long-running show said: “I think there is only one place we can start because I know, in the time off, Mr Jack P Shepherd got down on his knees…”

Jack was soon sharing details about the location of his trip before saying that Hanni ‘didn’t have a clue’ about the proposal but he may have had a tough time once back at home in the UK if he hadn’t have asked her to get married.

“She didn’t have a clue but, if we went on holiday to the safari and she came back with nothing on her hand there would have been a problem,” Jack said as his pals were quick to ask him why. Jack elaborated: “It would have been like, ‘What are doing?'”

Ben, who is known for playing Jack’s on-screen brother Nick Tilsley in Corrie, commented: “Any normal person would think a holiday…” to which Jack said: “No, no, no…. There’s a code. You get up to around seven years, Ben, and ‘What are we doing?'”

Jack went on to detail when and where the proposal took place, with Colson sounding slightly wounded that Jack and Hanni’s safari tour guide knew he was about to pop the question before he and Ben knew. “I had to tell him,” Jack insisted. “I had to tell him because I went, ‘You’re going to have to get us to a romantic spot’. I’m in the bush, I’m in the wild!”

Speaking about the guide being worried, Jack revealed: “He went home and he’s deeply religious so he told his mum and she went to church and prayed for us because he wasn’t sure she was going to say yes!”

Colson and Ben were quick to laugh with the former saying: “From what he’d seen on holiday…” Jack continued: “From what he’d seen on the holiday he wasn’t sure…” But Jack and his guide eventually came up with a plan, with Jack giving him a code of asking him to take a picture which was the cue he was about to get down on one knee and ask the all important question.

Jack and Hanni have been together since 2017 and originally met on the set of the long-running soap when Hanni was working as a scriptwriter.

Speaking about how they met, Jack previously told OK! magazine: “We met at Corrie but we only really knew each other to say hello to at work. Then our mutual friends got married and we were both guests at the wedding. We got chatting, I made Hanni laugh, we had a couple of drinks and we flirted. That was it.”
