It’s good news for one couple in EastEnders this week, as a show legend has confirmed that she is pregnant.
Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) and Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) have been trying to conceive through IVF for several months now, after Reiss revealed that he couldn’t conceive naturally.
Their last attempt ended in heartbreak when Sonia learnt that she had a blighted ovum, which meant that the egg hadn’t developed into a foetus.
Despite the heartbreak, Sonia and Reiss were determined to try again.
In more recent scenes, Sonia confided in Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) that she thought she might be pregnant, but she was too scared of being disappointed to take the test.
Kathy asked what Sonia the nurse would advise, and when she admitted that it would be better to know either way, Kathy offered to support her as she took the test.
As they waited for the results, Sonia confided in Kathy that she thought the unsuccessful IVF had been a punishment for her giving daughter Bex away after her birth.
Viewers will remember that Sonia had no idea she was pregnant when she gave birth to Bex in 2000, and gave her up for adoption shortly afterwards, before later fighting to get her back.
Kathy was quick to point out that she had done nothing wrong by putting her up for adoption, given that Sonia was still a child herself when she had her. She also compared it to her own situation after giving birth to daughter Donna at 14-years-old.
After receiving reassurance from Kathy, Sonia felt much better and soon learned the outcome she had been hoping for: she was expecting a child.
Her happiness didn’t last long, though, because Reiss had some news of his own.
After returning from a visit with his wife Debbie, Reiss told Sonia the truth about their debts, which shocked her to no end.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, Reiss made the decision to proceed with his scheme to deceive Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Will everything turn out okay, or is he about to be discovered?
