If GENERAL HOSPITAL viewers are wondering why they haven’t seen Austin in a while, it’s because actor Roger Howarth took some time off. In addition to providing an explanation for his absence and some motivation for the future, the actor posted a selfie from an Equinox gym.
“Work,” he wrote on Facebook. The idea behind progressive overload is that each task should get harder as you go. I’ve returned after taking a month off for COVID and a knee MRI. accountable to you as well. After 30 days, another gym post. We can both attempt something challenging during that time! Deal? It’s a means by which we can all encourage and uplift one another. Peace. Seriously, though…
Fans expressed how excited they were to see Howarth back on screen soon to find out what Austin was up to next in the comments after learning that he was feeling better. Some even pledged to eat healthier and shared their workout plans!
Howarth made his daytime television debut in 1992 with brief appearances on LOVING and GUIDING LIGHT before becoming a success as Todd Manning on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. His brief stint as a villain proved to be so successful that he stayed with the soap opera until 1998, earning two nominations for Daytime Emmy Awards and winning Outstanding Young Actor in 1994. He spent two years performing on the Broadway stage before coming home to Llanview in 2000.
Howarth received two more Emmy nominations in 2003, this time for Lead Actor, when he joined the cast of AS THE WORLD TURNS to play Paul Ryan. He returned to OLTL to reclaim the role of Todd after the CBS soap opera was cancelled in 2010 (it was later discovered that Trevor St. John, who had played Todd on the soap for years, was actually his twin brother, Victor Lord). Howarth joined fellow cast members Michael Easton (John) and Kristen Alderson (Starr) in moving their characters from OLTL to GH when the show ended in 2012.
The situation became complicated when Prospect Park filed a lawsuit against ABC for the rights to the OLTL characters, and GH gave each actor a new role. The role of Franco, which had previously been played by James Franco in a guest appearance, was then assumed by Howarth. Howarth made a comeback a few months after his previous alter ego, Austin Gatlin-Holt, was killed off in 2021.
It’s good to hear that Howarth is feeling better and will soon be returning to General Hospital because there’s plenty more juicy drama to come with Austin currently pretending to help Ava while concealing the fact he knows Nikolas is actually alive.
