In Wednesday’s (July 17) episode of Emmerdale, Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) was set to be released from prison after Samson Dingle (Sam Hall) admitted to lying about having intentionally stabbed him. However, his ordeal was far from ended.
After thuggish Robbo (John O’Neill) found out that Matty is transgender, he was so afraid of being in the prison that he had his cell mate inflict injuries on him. Moira (Natalie J. Robb) and Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) went to the hospital, where Matty was receiving treatment for his injuries.
The joyful news was delivered to Matty by his mother and wife, but just then a jail guard entered the room to take him back to the cell. He was returning to prison until the court rendered its ruling.
It didn’t take long for Robbo to return to his cage, and what a disgusting creature he was. Matty had no doubts that he was still in danger of getting beaten or worse from the words he used and the way he threatened to do it. Fortunately, a prison guard stepped in.
Later, when Matty was confined to his cell, the other inmates posed no threat to him physically, but their lewd jokes kept him awake and afraid for his life.
After being informed that he was now free, Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Amy went to pick him up on the day he was scheduled to appear in court. After leaving the court without seeing him, they made their way home, where Moira became concerned when she discovered that Matty had gone missing. She started looking for him and was able to locate him at the playground with some ease.
Samson stepped forward and apologized. After everything, Matty was curious as to why Samson was still standing up for his friend Josh (Osian Morgan), who had been the main catalyst for the events that transpired at the Hide on the day that Samson was stabbed.
He gave Samson the advise that everyone had been offering him: to keep his head down and his mouth shut. He also revealed to Samson what life was actually like in prison.
Amy was ecstatic to see Matty back home safely, but it didn’t take long for her to realize that he wouldn’t be able to easily reintegrate into society. He turned out the lights after Amy had gone to bed, but the sound of the house keys jangling, the light switch clicking, and the abrupt darkness all made him feel as though he was back in prison.
According to Ash Palmisciano, Matty will never be the same after his time in prison. “I think as humans whatever happens to us in our lives always affects us,” he said.
“It’s important to consider if going to prison is as traumatic as it is, especially if you are innocent.” There will be an effect on his life moving ahead and it will change who he is because it would be extremely hard to come out of something like that unscathed when you’ve been so wrongfully condemned and everything else.
It will also instill in him a great deal of resilience. I believe he already possesses a certain amount of resilience. He has definitely gone through a lot to get to where he is now the only transgender figure in the village. It’s fascinating to imagine what kind of persona he will take on after this encounter.
