In tonight’s dramatic episode of Coronation Street (17 July 2024), Joel Deering (Calum Lill) attempted to buy his victim, Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), into staying silent.

Joel was shocked to learn that Lauren was expecting his kid after she came out of hiding to visit an ailing Roy Cropper (David Neilson).

Fearing Joel—who had forced her into having sex and then hit her over the head—Lauren fled once more, leaving Roy’s gullible family members anxious to find her and establish Roy’s innocence about her absence once and for all.

Joel, in the meantime, arranged to marry Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown), impressing her with his declaration that he was concerned about Lauren and wanted to assist in her search.

Now that Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) was aware that Lauren had been using her credit card, Joel joined her in going through her credit card statements. Joel kept calling, attempting to find out where Lauren was living, while blackmailing teenager Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) to give him more money.

After finding a hint in one of the bank statements, Dee-Dee and Bethany went to Warrington, where they were contacted by a homeless lady who provided them with a new lead after revealing that she had met Lauren.

Joel, on the other hand, ran into Betsy again, who requested he pay her back. Joel threw Betsy out of his car and drove off to meet his fiancée, eager to see Lauren first, after Dee-Dee told him what she had learned about Lauren.

In response to the teen’s misbehavior in the factory and her second attempt at blackmailing Carla over the gang member who attacked Roy, Betsy was compelled to phone her mother, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), for assistance. This interrupted Lisa’s conversation with Carla Connor (Alison King).

Joel reached Lauren, who passed out in his arms as Dee-Dee and Bethany arrived. Meanwhile, Betsy was saved and later apologized to Carla and vowed she would never have revealed her secret.

Lauren informed the girls she was afraid as Joel encouraged her to keep his name out of things as she regained consciousness. After bringing her to the hospital for treatment, they learned that Lauren and her child were doing well, but that she would need to stay overnight because the doctors had discovered she had been squatting.

Lauren revealed to a nurse, at a heartbreaking moment, that she hoped her child would be a boy because he would have an easier life. Joel then went by himself to Lauren’s room and offered to keep her warm and fed if she told the police that she had been attacked by Nathan Curtis (Chris Harper) and that she didn’t want to file a report.

When Lisa showed there and Joel ran off, Lauren tried to confront him but stayed icy. We couldn’t help but wonder what Lauren would do next. Will she be honest with Lisa or will she act as Joel’s go-between to secure a place to live?
