EXCLUSIVE: Tina O’Brien, who plays Sarah Platt on Coronation Street, has been a part of the ITV soap opera for more than 20 years.

Fans of Coronation Street will recognise the Platts as one of the most recognisable families to reside on the Weatherfield cobbles.

They defeated the Slaters from Eastenders, the McQueens from Hollyoaks, and the Dingles from Emmerdale to win Best Family at the Soap Awards earlier this year.

Actress Tina O’Brien was all smiles when she spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about her on-screen family.

The serial star expressed her feelings about receiving the honour by saying, “Honestly, it’s a genuine big sense of pride.

I could get fairly upset over it since I adore Sue Nicholls and Helen Worth so much.

I began working on the show when I was 16 years old, and Helen has always treated me with love.

Tina acknowledged Helen’s success in fostering a sense of teamwork on set, which she thinks is essential to the Platt dynamic.

“You can work with others and they can be a little egotistical, but Helen is all about making something that works,” she continued.

“I believe it helped us create our own little soap family, and I honestly love the Platt family so much that I sometimes spend more time with them than I do with my own.

The late 1980s saw the beginning of the drama-filled family when Martin Platt (Sean Wilson’s character) began dating Gail Tilsley (Helen Worth).

The couple welcomed their son David (Jack P. Shepherd) in 1990, and the following year they got hitched.

Although Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Nick Tisley (Ben Price), Gail’s two children from her previous marriage, were added to the Platt family when Martin adopted them.

The Platts have been a part of some of the most dramatic plotlines in the ITV soap opera over the years, including teen pregnancies, sexual assaults, and unforeseen affairs.

The Platt family is currently interacting with a serial murderer without realising it because Gail’s brother Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) has been on a murdering rampage in Weatherfield.

Although he hasn’t been caught yet, ITV executives have promised that he will eventually receive justice, so the actor may be saying goodbye to the cobbles forever.

Regarding his impending departure, Tina said: “However it turns out, I’ll be heartbroken if and when Todd leaves.

“I love working with him and I admire him. I do, however, hope that it strengthens the bond between the Platts.

We are a family that has won awards, so I think it would be wonderful if that sparks a sentiment like, “We need to be together and we need to work through this together.”
