Matilda Freeman played the original Summer Spellman on Coronation Street from 2017 until 2020, and has since landed a new role in dark comedy Passenger

Four years after departing from the ITV soap opera, a Coronation Street actress has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis for a new role. Alongside another Corrie icon, Matilda Freeman, who portrayed Summer Spellman from 2017 to 2020, is currently appearing in a dark comedy called Passenger.

Before departing to pursue other possibilities, Matilda made appearances in 147 episodes of Coronation Street. She portrays Lilly in her new role, and she looks nothing like she did when she was on the cobbles. Her auburn hair has replaced her blonde hair, and her nose is covered with freckles.

The little star can be seen in one of the series’ photos with her hair done in a half-up, half-down fashion, an oversized green coat, and heart-shaped earrings. In the new ITV series, she co-stars with Jack James Ryan, best known for playing Jacob Hay on Corrie.

Along with Debbie Rush, who gained fame for her portrayal of Anna Windass in Corrie, the show also stars Karen Henthorn, who was a cast member of the soap opera from 2007 to 2010. Fans of soap operas should not miss the new show, which features an appearance by Tom Lister, the actor who portrayed Carl King in Emmerdale in the past.

Previously, Matilda had said that her part in the beloved soap opera was “quite limiting”. “You’re under contract at Corrie, so you can’t work on anything else while you’re there, so it was quite limiting,” she said to her admirers on social media.

“I’d like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew, and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles,” she said to her admirers as she said goodbye to the cherished program.

“After three and a half lovely years I felt it was time for a change and I’m excited to be starting that next chapter with a new role.”

Since then, Matilda has taken on various roles. For example, in an episode of Alma’s Not Normal in 2021, she played Lin as a teenager. She made cameos in a number of films before joining Corrie, including as the 2019 captivating feature The Last Boy and the BBC series Doctors.

Coworkers who are excited about the new series, such as Harriet Bibby, posted on social media with multiple ‘hands-up’ emojis and the message “WHO’S READY?!” Elle Mulvaney’s character Amy Barlow continued to advertise the new television series X by writing: “Passenger with our @JackJamesRyan on ITV1 and ITVX! [Popcorn emoji].”
