Claims made by an EastEnders star about his family were rejected by Sir Cliff Richard, who called them “absolute rubbish.”
When EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks asked Sir Cliff Richard a question on The One Show, things became uncomfortable.
Both the soap actor and the 83-year-old singer have been on the BBC discussion program before. When Charlie, who portrayed Janine Butcher on the BBC One serial opera EastEnders, questioned Sir Cliff about a family mystery—that he could have previously filled in for her grandfather’s band—things became ugly. Indeed, that was thought to be the method by which he was found.
During their 2022 visit on the show, Charlie sought to learn the truth behind the rumor and said to Sir Cliff, “The story went Cliff that you back in the day were a roadie for my granddad.”
“Now, that may be a myth; it might have been altered. We’re not sure.” Charlie said, “One evening, the lead singer went off and you stepped in, and there was a scout in that night and that’s when you were discovered.”
But Sir Cliff dismissed her tale with a sardonic sneer, calling the rumor “absolute rubbish” and dismissing it without mercy.
Gethin Jones commented, laughing with co-host Alex Jones, “Such a brilliant build up, as well, wasn’t it?” Charlie laughed at Cliff’s reaction even though he was devastated that the family story wasn’t real, and Sir Cliff found it amusing as well.
He subsequently clarified, though, that the family rumor about Charlie was “close” to the truth, adding that he used to perform in bars with two of his pals, a guitarist and a drummer.
Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, was one of the locations where they performed. Charlie went on, “Yeah, Terry Park is their hometown! He was the exact replica of his twin.” As Sir Cliff admitted, there was some truth to the narrative.
He related the story of a talent scout who happened to wander into the bar where his band was performing. The scout watched the band play and then told Sir Cliff, “I can make you a star.”
He first refused to trust the scout, claiming that he and the other members of his bands were laughing out loud in response. However, he eventually acknowledged that the scout had aided in advancing his career by getting the band concerts at locations like the renowned 2i’s Coffee Bar in Soho, London.
