This week on Home and Away, Irene succumbs to her demons and sprints towards her biggest kryptonite—alcohol—after years of leading a sober life.

Irene (Lynne McGranger), still struggling with remorse, is hiding away in her house from the outside world while the repercussions of her acts with scammer Bronte (Stefanie Caccamo) rage in her mind.

After being abducted by the scammers and imprisoned in a shipping container, Dana (Ally Harris) could have been killed, and she nearly voluntarily bankrupted herself and her company, which she co-owns with her best friend Leah (Ada Nicodemou)!

How could she have let Bronte to so easily cover her eyes?

Lynne, 71, tells TV WEEK, “Irene has always prided herself on being a great judge of character.”

“And this has obviously gone completely wrong with Bronte.”

When she doesn’t show up for work, a worried John (Shane Withington) comes to check on her since she can’t get out of bed. However, when his attempt at consolation accidentally irritates her, she quickly throws him out and rushes to a hidden whisky stash she had been keeping under the sink.

Irene pours herself a drink and tosses it back, even if every instinct tells her not to.

And just to be safe, a second one.

Officially, Irene is no longer with the group.

Lynne goes on to say, “She returns to alcohol because it’s an escape for her, as most alcoholics know, because of the shame and despair she feels.”

After putting down a bottle, Irene enters the coffee cart, where Marilyn (Emily Symons) and a perplexed Leah are startled to see her stumbling around. And it’s obvious to everyone around her that Irene is having serious problems when she interrupts Dana and Xander (Luke Van Os) as they discuss their relationship.

Irene’s history of alcohol consumption is concerning, but she has always recovered with the support of her friends. But this time, will Irene’s guilt over Bronte’s fraud be too much to bear, and will it be the last straw that breaks the camel’s back?
