Emmerdale’s Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) is a character you would probably describe as independent and resilient, but recently her confidence has taken some major knocks thanks to being robbed and blackmailed by Faye (Jane Gurnett) – a woman she dated and allowed herself to trust.
‘To have the person she considered to be the love of her life betray her this way, it’s been tough,’ Louise Jameson told us. ‘It has completely shaken her confidence. There’s a huge strength in being vulnerable, strength because it is a risk. Mary took the risk and it didn’t pay off.
‘Mary is a woman with a lot of pride and has had to cope with a lot in her life – and she certainly doesn’t want to appear weak and vulnerable at this precise moment in time. She has only recently been those things and look where that’s got her.’
Because of this knock to her mum’s confidence, Rhona (Zoe Henry) comes up with the idea of a ‘Face Your Fears Day’ as she encourages Mary to tackle her fears head on and go on a date.
‘She is very daunted to hear what Rhona has planned,’ Louise revealed. ‘Mary’s very good at solving everyone’s problems but her own. By the end she’s very touched to feel so supported. In fact I recorded a line yesterday whilst filming: “I love it here, don’t you, everyone chipping in supporting each other” – and this particular story line has given her this train of thought.’

Louise doesn’t necessarily agree that all problems are best tackled head-on. ‘If there’s a problem then there’s a solution, if there isn’t a solution then it’s a fact of life and has to be lived with,’ she told us. But one thing she’s a very firm believer in is empathy, the ability to be able to see the world from other people’s point of view.
The point of stepping out of your comfort zone, she told us, was ‘To stay alive, keep the adrenaline flowing, to learn, to be curious, to step into others’ shoes. If more people did that the world would be a safer and kinder place for sure.’
She thinks that women are inherently brave: ‘They do what needs to be done to put bread on the table.’ When possible she pushes herself to face her own fears by going on ‘some very unusual holidays.’
‘I spent New Year’s Eve on a tiny African island called Gorée,’ she told us. ‘The journey getting there was very frightening, but oh my goodness, so worth the ride!’
