The first time television fans traveled to Genoa City was on March 26, 1973, when THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS made its CBS debut. The aristocratic Brooks family and the working-class Foster clan were the main subjects of this half-hour soap opera, which was created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. In 1980, Y&R expanded to an hour and included the Abbotts, Williamses, Newmans, Barber-Winters, and Baldwin-Fishers to the canvas.
Y&R has won numerous Daytime Emmy Awards and won the Outstanding Drama Series trophy eleven times in its 51-year run on television. Since 1988, it has also had the greatest ratings of any midday drama broadcast. While many performers have come and gone over the years, several actors—Peter Bergman as Jack, Eric Braeden as Victor, and Melody Thomas Scott as Nikki—have stayed in the roles for many years.
