Actor Ray Meagher of Home and Away has revealed his plans for his 80th birthday celebration.

Tomorrow, July 4, marks the star’s milestone birthday. The actor has been playing Alf Stewart on the Australian TV/streaming service soap opera since it started more than 35 years ago. He wants the festivities to be little, despite the fact that it’s a huge birthday. Pardon the pun.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph’s Australian branch, he clarified that he’s the type of person who would rather celebrate his birthday “under the radar” and that this year he has a full workday.

“I’ve got seven straight scenes, so I will be up at five in the morning and finish at seven,” he stated.

“I’ve always avoided parties a little bit. I used to make jokes about [Irene Roberts actor] Lynne McGranger because she would announce a month in advance to everyone that it was her birthday and would continue to celebrate for another month.

“I am perfectly happy to slink under the radar and go along quietly, but I love a party, meaning a few beers with a few friends.”

To commemorate the occasion, the Home and Away Instagram account posted a unique homage along with some old photos:

Meagher stated at the beginning of the previous year that he would be staying on the soap opera for a considerable amount of time, saying, “I signed a contract last year for another five years! Thus, I’ll surely follow up on that.”

In a different interview, he stated that he had considered himself a “lost soul” if he had not succeeded as an actor. Prior to his audition, he worked as a cab driver for a little period, and he kept that job as a fallback for a while.

“I kind of reasoned that I wouldn’t be able to obtain any more acting employment, so I hung onto that taxi license for nearly ten years. He said, “I’ll hang on, it’s all going to dry up, so I’ll cling on,” and I did just that, continuing to work and complete bits and pieces.”
