Paul Green, a worker at Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management, is the recipient of the MyPorter Awards’ Dennis Southern Award.
He started working in the post room of the former Ashington Hospital in 1975, and he is still servicing local patients nearly 50 years later.
Paul expressed his feelings: “My friends and family were in complete shock when I told them that I had won the award. I was overcome with emotion.”

“I honestly did not expect it, as I was running against two other candidates.”
Because I get to work with such amazing portering teams, I truly like my job as a porter. Everyone was praising me, and I work in a really pleasant atmosphere.
In memory of Dennis Southern, a porter at Northumbria Healthcare prior to his passing in 2020, a nationwide award was established.
The award is given to other porters who exhibit the same traits as Dennis, who demonstrated devotion, dedication, and compassion to all of the patients and families he interacted with throughout his career.
“Day in and day out, Paul has shown his commitment to the trust to help provide our patients with a positive experience during a time of vulnerability,” stated Damon Kent, managing director of Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management.
It’s wonderful to see a Northumbria Healthcare employee take home the Dennis Southern Award.
“It demonstrates how Dennis’ values and work ethic have been inherited by our employees, who together make up the amazing workforce we have today.”
